Charles "Chuck" Winthrop was a local resident of the Madison, Wisconsin area for many years of his life. He owned a large wheat, barley, corn farm just 35 miles north of the city. Chuck was famous for the roles he played in WWII. One evening, he was flying from England to France where encountered heavy artillery fire from gunboats over the English Channel. Chuck tried various maneuvers to outrun the blast of gunfire, but was unable to do so. He bailed out from his plane just before it nose-dived into the drink. Stranded for 6 hours, frost-bitten, he was pulled from the icy cold waters by a friendly passing freighter. Eventually his regiment was strategically responsible for ending the war. Chuck was one "helluva" guy.

Dedicated to all WWII veterans

In loving memory, friends of Winthrop family
